Beware the Ice Storm in Jersey City!

Beware the Ice Storm in Jersey City!Shocker… a new winter storm is on its way to Jersey City as we speak. Snow is expected to begin tonight with totals of 3 to 6 inches and possibly 8 inches in some spots. While that may not seem like too much snow, that’s not what you should be worrying about.

As the temperatures slowly climb throughout the day tomorrow morning and afternoon, the snow will turn to sleet and freezing rain. That’s not good for Jersey City residents who will be outside during the weather. The icy conditions can lead to a variety of slip and fall injuries.

Sidewalk Slip and Falls

Ice can cause sidewalks and walkways in Jersey City to become treacherous, especially when people who travel on them daily aren’t accounting for the icy and slippery conditions.

When you are injured because of a slip and fall incident on an icy sidewalk, the party responsible for that area of the sidewalk may be held accountable for your injuries. The liable party could include a business owner or the city itself. Either party is responsible for making sure the sidewalk is not dangerous to others.

Parking Lot Slip and Falls

A lot of what was said about slip and fall incidents on sidewalks can be said about incidents in Jersey City parking lots. The person or party responsible for taking care of that parking lot is responsible for any injuries that occur. The responsible party may not be able to stop the snow, sleet, and freezing rain from falling, but they could put ice meltdown to prevent or somewhat prevent the dangerous conditions from occurring.

Store/Commercial Property Slip and Falls

Wait, how can ice and snow cause slip and fall incidents inside a store or commercial property? Well, it’s easier than you think. The excess snow or ice that people bring inside with their footwear can build up and then melt because of the warmer temperatures inside. This can cause the floor to be slippery for unsuspecting workers and/or customers.

Private Homes

Things are a little different when it comes to slip and fall incidents that happen in private homes (including your own private property). It’s the responsibility of the homeowner or property owner to make sure their premises are clear of dangerous conditions for guests. If not, they will be responsible for what injuries occurred. Unlike sidewalks, parking lots, and store/commercial properties, the compensation you will receive will come from the property owner’s homeowner insurance.
