According to the U.S. Coast Guard, boating fatalities had increased from 2013 to 2014 by 8.9 percent. As did injuries, from 2,620 to 2,678. Although these numbers are set record lows for boating accidents, the fatality rate is still pretty high – a 10.6 percent increase in 2014 from the previous year. The five primary contributing factors in fatal boating accidents were:
- Use of alcohol
- Excessive speed
- Inexperience by the operator
- Improper lookout
- Inattention by the operator
All of these factors can be avoided as long as you take simple precautions before going out on the water. Here’s a few safety tips to keep in mind as you enjoy a day out on the boat:
- Always wear a life jacket, especially if you aren’t strong swimmer. Make sure your guests, and children especially, are wearing jackets as well.
- Take a boating safety course so you know what to do in case of an emergency.
- Get a free vessel safety check from the Coast Guard before heading out to make sure your boat is in tip top shape.
- Just like driving a vehicle, if you are the operator of the boat, make sure you avoid alcohol or any other substances.
