According to data cited by the Pew Research Center, a growing share of Americans have used—and currently use—ridesharing apps. Uber is the largest ridesharing company in New Jersey. Taking an Uber can be convenient and cost-effective. Of course, there is always a risk of an accident.

This raises a question: How much does Uber pay in an accident claim? The answer depends on several factors. Within this article, our Jersey City Uber accident attorney explains the key things to know about how much the ridesharing company will pay for a crash in New Jersey.

Know the Law: New Jersey has Specialized Insurance Regulations for Ridesharing Companies

New Jersey has specific insurance regulations for ridesharing companies, such as Uber and Lyft, to ensure that passengers and drivers are protected in the event of an accident. These regulations require ridesharing companies to maintain a certain level of liability coverage for their drivers, both when they are logged into the app and waiting for a ride request, as well as when they are actively transporting passengers.

When a ridesharing driver (Uber driver) is looking for a fare, there are also specialized regulations in place—with at least $50,000 for death or bodily injury per person and $100,000 per accident required. An Uber that is “off the clock” is not covered by these commercial regulations.
