Sure he insults you, or becomes extremely jealous when you hang out with your girlfriends, or refuses to listen to your side of the argument. But he’s never hit you, so it can’t be a case of domestic violence…right?

Does this sound familiar? It’s sad to say that this scenario happens more often than not. You may not realize that these are all signs of domestic abuse. Yes, domestic violence doesn’t have to involve physical abuse. There are different types of abuse that you should be aware of.

First, you should know the true definition of domestic violence. According to the University of Michigan, domestic violence occurs when someone attempts to control his/her partner in a relationship. Some of the ways he/she can do this is through physical and emotional abuse, isolation, sexual assault, threats, coercion, or even economic abuse (i.e. controlling of his/her partner’s money).

You should also know that domestic violence is a very real problem and yes, it is illegal. If your partner uses physical violence, this is considered an illegal act and the abuser can be arrested and prosecuted.
