Does this sound familiar? It’s sad to say that this scenario happens more often than not. You may not realize that these are all signs of domestic abuse. Yes, domestic violence doesn’t have to involve physical abuse. There are different types of abuse that you should be aware of.
First, you should know the true definition of domestic violence. According to the University of Michigan, domestic violence occurs when someone attempts to control his/her partner in a relationship. Some of the ways he/she can do this is through physical and emotional abuse, isolation, sexual assault, threats, coercion, or even economic abuse (i.e. controlling of his/her partner’s money).
You should also know that domestic violence is a very real problem and yes, it is illegal. If your partner uses physical violence, this is considered an illegal act and the abuser can be arrested and prosecuted.
But how do you know if your relationship is abusive. The University of Michigan has created a list of questions you should ask yourself. Some of the questions include:
- Does your partner constantly ridicule or insult you?
- Does your partner keep you financially dependent on him/her?
- Get angry when you disagree?
- Threaten to hurt you or your children?
- Manipulate you with lies and promises that never come true?
- Become extremely jealous?
- Undermine your self-esteem?
If you said yes to any of these questions, then it’s time to get some help. If you are a victim of domestic abuse and need legal advice, we’re here to help. Contact the Law Offices of Anthony Carbone today for a free consultation.
