Male domestic abuse claims are regularly overlooked for one simple reason. It’s thought to be taboo for a man to be hurt by a woman. Throughout human history, men have generally been considered to be the stronger gender. Therefore, being abused by your female partner may be viewed as a sign of weakness. Men who are abused may view it as a source of shame and embarrassment. This makes it more difficult for men to come forward about being abused.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in seven men over the age of 18 are abused by an intimate partner each year. That’s not all, as one in ten men are either raped, physically abused, or stalked by an intimate partner.
Sexual preference doesn’t matter either. Three in ten heterosexual men have experienced sexual violence other than rape in their lifetime, as compared to two in five homosexual men. Male victims in a same-sex relationship might not want to come forward with a domestic violence claim because it could lead to their homosexual status being made public. Recognizing the Signs of Abuse
Sometimes, it’s hard to recognize the signs of domestic violence, especially when the victim is male. Keep in mind that not all abuse is physical. Here are a few warning signs that could mean you or another male you know is experiencing domestic violence:
- Your partner constantly insults you, calls you names, or puts you down.
- Your partner tries to control you by choosing what clothes you wear, what you spend your money on, or where you go.
- Your partner prevents you from seeing your family or friends.
- You are accused of being unfaithful or your partner constantly acts jealous.
- Physical violence such as hitting, slapping, or shoving.
- Your partner forces you to perform sexual acts against your will.
If any of these signs sound familiar, there is a chance you are suffering from domestic violence. Your partner may commit these acts to purposely intend you harm or instill fear in you at the very least. If you think the behavior is normal, it’s not. Regardless if you are a man or a woman being abused, the behavior needs to end immediately.
