Megan’s Law: How Do You Get on the Registry?

megans-law-sex-registry-anthony-carboneIn Wednesday’s blog, we explained what Megan’s Law is. In today’s blog, we’re going to explain how a sex offender gets on the online registry in New Jersey.

When you commit a sex crime of any type of nature, New Jersey will rank your offense in a tier system. If your offense is considered either a tier 2 or a tier 3, then you will be ordered to register for the internet registry. Normally, offenders who have been found to be repetitive and compulsive by experts and the courts, regardless of their conviction are the ones who end up on the registry.

The types of offenses that require registration are as follows:

What happens is a sex offender must fill out a registration form and submit it to the local police department. The form will include personal information such as home address and place of employment. Once the information is confirmed, it will be placed in the Sex Offender Registry. If you are sex offender convicted in another state you are required to register even if you’re just attending school or are employed in NJ.

What if you’re a juvenile? Do you get placed on the list? Yes, if you commit a sex offense while under the age of 18, you have to register just like an adult.

So now that you know how to get on the list, how does someone get off the registry? That’s the subject of Monday’s blog.
