Let’s start with fatalities. According to a news article earlier this year, more than 600 people died in New Jersey traffic accidents in 2016. Of them, 167 were pedestrians, including some on bicycles. Unfortunately, the numbers are up substantially from prior years.
On a local level, the data seems scarce when it comes to determining if weather factors into pedestrian accidents. Notwithstanding, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has studied the topic extensively. What do they pinpoint as the reasons for most pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrian Accident Statistics
First, location is a primary concern when it comes to pedestrian accidents. And, if you live in Hudson County, you stand a better chance of being hit by a car than if you reside in a rural area. More and more pedestrian accidents occur in cities.
In short, you should take extra caution if you plan on crossing the street in Hoboken, West New York or Jersey City. (Obviously, those are just some of the communities where there are accelerated concerns regarding pedestrian accidents.)
However, some other statistics might surprise you. We mentioned that weather might be a factor. As it stands, more fatal pedestrian accidents occur on Halloween and New Year’s Day than any other time of the year. You can draw your own conclusions considering both holidays.
Since timing is everything, it is also interesting to learn that a significant number of pedestrian accidents happen between 3 and 6 am. Could it have anything to do with the time that bars close down for the night? Or, is there a problem with fatigued drivers?
Although you can most likely guess at the reason for a majority of pedestrian accidents, let’s break some down:
- Inattentiveness on the part of the driver and/or pedestrian
- Failure of the pedestrian or driver to follow traffic signals or signs
- Distracted driving or distracted walking
- Jaywalking
- Intoxication on the part of the driver or pedestrian
- Improperly lit areas
