Take a Moment Today to Remember Road Traffic Victims

World Day of Remembrance 2015 Anthony Carbone1After the events of this weekend’s tragedy in Paris, it’s hard to remember that today we take a moment to remember another type of victim — road traffic victims. November 15 has been designated as World Day of Remembrance for road traffic victims, a day dedicated to remember the millions of people who have lost their lives in a traffic accident. World Day of Remembrance began 20 years ago in Europe and has been picking up steam every since with events behind held across the globe. And it’s a day that is desperately needed.

According to a recent report by the World Health Organization, there are approximately 1.25 million people who die each year as a result of road traffic crashes. Although countries have been making improvements in road safety, such as enacting laws on drinking and driving, seat belts, helmet laws, and child safety seats, the WHO says that these changes are just too slow to make an impact. What’s worse is that car makers are not really helping in decreasing fatal accidents — the WHO report states that 80 percent of the vehicles sold worldwide do not meet basic safety standards.

Of course, the major concern involves motorcycles and pedestrians. WHO reports that motorcycle riders and pedestrians make up 23 percent and 22 percent respectively of all road traffic victims, a problem that is on the rise. Many of these accidents come from Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific regions. It’s up to everyone to make sure our streets are safer for not only vehicles but pedestrians as well.
