According to the National Safety Council, there are 540,000 slip and fall accidents each year that require a trip to the hospital. Of those accidents, 300,000 are serious injuries. In addition, there are 25,000 deaths each year caused by a simple slip and fall accident.
You may think a simple accident will only leave a bruise on both your body and your pride, but that’s not necessarily the case. Some of the more common injuries from a slip and fall in the wintertime include head/brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, and severe soft tissue injuries.
Although we can never really prepare for the unexpected, there are ways to protect yourself from a slip and fall accident. Here are a few tips to keep in mind this winter when everything becomes a slippery mess:
- Keep an eye on your footing. Take very small and slow steps.
- Put down the phone and concentrate on your walking.
- Remember to wear proper shoes when going out. A pair of sneakers is not going to prevent you from slipping.
- Be aware of the terrain. If it changes, change your stride accordingly.
