Some Tips to Avoid Bicycle Accidents

Longer daylight and warmer temperatures often transform choices in transportation modes.  Buses and trains seem less crowded as some hit the pavement to reach their destinations.  Others will hop on their bicycles.  As always, safety should be a primary concern.  We would like to do our part to provide you with some helpful tips to avoid bicycle accidents.

For most, bicycle riding starts in the neighborhood or in a local park.  Are there restrictions on riding bicycles elsewhere?  The State of New Jersey’s Department of Transportation mandates the exclusion of bicycle riders on certain roadways.  You can see the list here.  It is not surprising that the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike do not allow bicycles.  However, it is interesting that they may be ridden on portions of Route 1 and Route 18.

• Conduct routine maintenance and equipment checks on your bicycle.
• Bicyclists under age 17 are required to wear helmets. We suggest that all bike riders wear them to avoid the risk of head injuries.
• Wear bright colors so that other vehicle operators can easily see you.
• Make yourself more visible by adding reflectors to your shoes, pedals and bicycle
• If you must ride your bike at night, attempt to stay in brightly lit areas. Make sure the requisite lights on your bicycle are functional.
• Do not allow distractions to deter from your safety. Stay alert.  Be attentive.

After a Bicycle Accident

A bicycle accident should be treated as a serious event.  Of course, medical attention is the primary concern.  In addition, you should attempt to do the following:

• Make sure the police are called to the accident scene and that you provide the officer with your version of the accident. You want this information recorded in the police report.
• Secure documentation from the vehicle driver. This includes name and address, license plate number and insurance coverage information.
• Take photographs of the scene, your bike and the other vehicle.
• Ascertain contact information for prospective witnesses.
