Not only do you have to contend with pesky bugs that bite and sting, but there’s also dangerous plants to keep an eye out for like poison ivy or oak. And what will happen if you had a nasty tumble? Are you prepared for a serious injury?
Before participating in any outdoor activity, especially going for a hike, you should be prepared for any situation that may arise. Here’s a few hike safety tips to keep in mind before heading out into the woods:
- Always let someone you know where you’ll be hiking and when you expect to be back. You don’t want a “127 Hours” situation to happen to you.
- Know what you’ll be facing before you heading out. Don’t just head to your favorite hiking trial “on a whim.” Take a moment to study any maps before beginning your trip and know what the weather is going to be like. Take a moment to highlight your route and mark down any campsites, water stops, and major road intersections.
- Pack accordingly. Make sure you have a first aid kit in case you get stung or are injured. Having a compass and a canteen doesn’t hurt either.
- Wear proper clothing. Hiking boots are a must. You may also want to wear pants, to prevent ticks and other dangers.
- If you get lost in the woods, don’t panic. Take a deep breath and try to retrace your steps. If you’re still lost, you may want to stay put. Someone will find you soon!
