You notice that your child is acting differently. Is it more than separation anxiety? Your gut tells you something is wrong. Could your child be the victim of daycare abuse?

Every parent’s worst nightmare is that something will happen to harm their child. The overall statistics regarding child abuse are frightening. The National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS)  collects statistics regarding child abuse and neglect.  The number of complaints exceeds six million children.  The majority involve a family member.  However, there is a percentage of children who are abused or neglected when left in private or commercial daycare facilities.  How will you know if your child is one of them?

Should you be Suspicious of Daycare Abuse?

Almost all parents have considered dropping their children off at someone’s house for care while they are at work or running errands. You might not realize that child care centers are actually regulated by New Jersey state regulations. The state defines child care centers as the care of six or more children. This does include supervision of children under age thirteen, regardless of whether they are cared for in someone’s home or a facility.

Of course, the advantage of daycare providers who follow these regulations is self-evident. Presumably, the government’s involvement in the child care arrangement will add to your child’s safety. Notwithstanding, that doesn’t mean your infant or toddler is still not at risk for daycare abuse.

The daunting question remains. Should you be suspicious of daycare abuse? Has your child given you any signals that things aren’t right at the child care center?  Here are some typical warning signs:

One caution. The display of any of these actions does not mean your child is necessarily the victim of abuse. Even if the child reports an act of abuse or neglect, they may be embellishing the story. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t take it under advisement. Just be aware that most child care providers are genuinely concerned with providing good care.
