Oh the holidays bring beauty. Just driving down the road and looking over to your neighbors’ houses, you can see all the twinkling lights and the glittering tinsel in the windows. But be careful, like we’ve seen in the classic “A Christmas Vacation,” decorating can cause some damage to you and your home (or, in this case, your neighbor’s).
Here’s some general ways you can protect you and your loved ones from injury this holiday season, from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission:
- Keep matches, lighters and any candles away from children
- Avoid smoking from any of the flammable decorations
- Never use electric lights on a metal tree
- Artificial snow sprays can irritate your lungs so make sure you follow the directions before use
- Check your lights before plugging them in. Make sure there are no frayed wires, damaged bulbs or loose connections
- Use wires to hold your tree against the wall or ceiling and make sure it is not blocking the flow of traffic
- Fasten your outdoor lights securely so there is no wind damage
Remember that you are not invincible — just because it’s the holiday season, that doesn’t mean you can’t be hurt.
