According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration, 24 percent of weather-related accidents each year occur when the pavement is snowy, slushy or icy and 15 percent happen during either a snowfall or sleet. On an annual basis, more than 1,300 people are killed and more than 116,800 people are injured when the pavements become snowy. Not only does the weather wreck havoc with drivers, it can do some damage to New Jersey’s wallet — the FHA says that winter road maintenance accounts for roughly 20 percent of many states’ DOT maintenance budgets. Just think, millions are spent repairing any infrastructure damage caused by snow and ice!
Winter weather driving is never easy, no matter how long you’ve been driving in it. And it can be difficult to submit a claim to the insurance company after a weather-related accident. But we’re here to help! Here are some tips to keep in mind to prevent getting into a winter weather accident:
- Remember to move slowly while driving in the snow. Always accelerate and decelerate slowly. By applying the gas slowly, you will regain traction easier and avoid skids.
- Don’t power up a hill. By applying gas, your wheels will just spin and you’ll get nowhere. Instead, try to get a running start and let the inertia push you up the hill. Whatever you do, don’t stop on the hill. You won’t get going again.
- Always make sure your gas tank is at least half-full and make sure your tires are properly inflated.
- Avoid driving when fatigued. And keep your eyes on the road. Stay alert!
- Avoid using the cruise control. If you start to skid while using the cruise control, instead of slowing down the car may speed up and rapidly spin the wheels to maintain your speed.
- And of course, the best piece of advice is to stay home when in snows!
