According to a recent news article, a New York man was recently sentenced to over five years in prison for his role in a road rage accident on the Garden State Parkway. He and another driver reached speeds of over 100 mph. They also made quick lane changes in front of each other.
Ultimately, the operator of one of the vehicles decided to stop short. When the second driver lost control, one of the car’s passengers was ejected. She later died at the hospital. Subsequently, both vehicle operators were charged and convicted of vehicular homicide related to road rage.
What You Should Do if You’re Concerned about Road Rage
Everyone has the potential for becoming involved in a road rage incident. Unfortunately, it’s not just your own temper that you need to have in check. It’s not just that motor vehicles can be lethal weapons. Irate drivers can get into fist fights. Unfortunately, some road rage incidents can also involve guns and knives.
The first thing to do is you’re concerned about road rage is not to be the aggressor. A national study showed that a third of participants admitted that they had perpetrated an act of road rage. Fortunately, only a small percentage resulted in personal injury.
Of course, that still leaves a large number of individuals who are road rage victims. Here are some important suggestions that may help those who have concerns:
- Don’t get lured into an incident by someone else’s unsafe actions. Even if another driver cuts you off, repeating the offense does nothing. You can be right without being an aggressive driver yourself. Safety first.
- Do your best to keep a distance from the driver that is attempting to engage you in road rage. Let them speed away.
- Under no circumstances, pull over to the side of the road for a conversation that could result in confrontation.
- Avoid eye contact with the irate driver.
- Make a mental note of the other vehicle license plate number.
- If you feel threatened, seek emergency help from the police.
