From getting your loved one the perfect gift to the inconvenience of traveling to your grandmother’s house to planning the last part of the year, we’re all feeling the strain. The last thing we want to think about now is getting arrested.

Unfortunately, crime does not take a holiday. Not only does shoplifting increase during this time of the year, but so do other types of theft. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey, there is an increase of two types of crimes in December — robbery and personal larceny, aka taking another person’s property.

These stats make sense. We’ve all seen the videos on social media of thieves stealing packages straight off their neighbor’s property. But with tensions running high, a simple misunderstanding can turn into a criminal charge. And no one wants that during this time of the year.

Here are some examples of common holiday crimes and the consequences surrounding them.

Robbery and Theft

Maybe you left the store without paying for an item by accident. Or perhaps you wanted that TV but didn’t have the money to pay for it. No matter what the case is, you need to be aware that stores across our state have extra security during this time of year and that means shoppers are under surveillance at all times. Even shoplifting a small item can result in hefty fines and possible jail time.

Domestic Violence

The holidays put a lot of stress on people, which could lead to a violent exchange with your significant other. It’s best to keep your temper in check. Get out of the house and cool off before you do something you regret later.

DUI/DWI

Holiday parties are a lot of fun, but you better be careful of your alcohol intake! Especially if you’re planning to drive home right after the party. We discussed what you could be facing if you get into a drunk driving accident in an earlier blog. But if you are facing a DUI without causing an accident, you will still face huge fines, an ignition interlock system, and a suspended license.
