- Have your phone and money ready to go. Make sure that your phone is fully charged. You never know when the situation will become out of hand, causing a need to leave immediately.
- Have a “safe” word or phrase. If you are in an emergency situation, you may not be able to tell whoever is on the other end of a phone call what is exactly going on. Try to have an agreed upon “safe” word with a friend or family member who is on standby and ready to take your call.
- Keep the abuse in the open. Domestic violence is such a secretive issue. It almost always happens behind closed doors. If abuse does occur, make sure it’s in a public setting where potential witnesses might be.
- Ready an escape plan. Just as you need a close friend or family member on standby, you should have an escape plan ready to go if things become dangerous. Consider possible escape routes in your home and make sure you check that your plan will be successful.
