There was no way you could have avoided it. You were caught driving under the influence. What now? As we explained before, New Jersey is pretty tough when it comes to DUIs, even if it is your first offense. This is what you can expect if you are convicted of a DUI:
- For a first conviction, you can lose your license from three months to one year, up to 30 days in prison, and 12-48 hours of community service. You will also receive numerous fines. If your blood alcohol level was more than 0.15%, you will also receive an ignition interlock device on your car for up to six months following your license reinstatement
- For a second conviction, you lose your license for two years, up to 90 days in prison, 30 days of community service, 12 to 48 hours of instruction from the Intoxicated Driver Resource Center, numerous fines and the ignition lock for up to three years following license reinstatement
- For a third conviction, you will lose your license for 10 years, up to 180 days in prison, up to 90 days of community service, numerous fines, and the ignition lock and IDRC penalties.
