NJ dangerous roadways fatal accidents anthony carboneOver the weekend, NJ.com had released a report detailing the deadliest roadways in New Jersey in 2014. According to the report, fatal auto accidents on major highways and roadways had increased in 2014, from 213 in 2013 to 229. As you would suspect, the deadliest highways include the most busiest — the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway were the number one and two deadliest roads in 2014. But when looking at the list, a disturbing fact arrises. Not all the roads are giant roadways — in fact, the report mentioned that I-80 and Route 1 had seen a decrease in auto fatalities in 2014.

Unfortunately, New Jersey is following the same trend that the rest of the country is following. Thanks to lower oil prices and an improving economy, fatal auto accidents are on the rise everywhere. And the number one cause for many of these accidents include speeding. According to the AAA, traveling at high speeds on the Parkway and Turnpike were the major cause for many of these fatal accidents.

What can be done to make our roads safer? Although some say road design needs to be updated, one of the major factors involved in these crashes is distracted driving. Even when you us the speech to text mode on your phone, it still means your brain is distracted from driving, making you miss important events such as traffic slowing down. The best way to avoid a fatal accident is keeping your eyes on the road, avoid excessive speeding, and watch out for any dangers that arise on the roadways.
