In October, drug manufacturer Johnson & Johnson had recalled approximately 13,500 bottles of the drug Xarelto after it was discovered the blood thinner had been contaminated. The recall occurred after several lawsuits were filed against the company by patients who say the drug created uncontrollable bleeding, leading to death in some patients. The lawsuit states that the patients had not been properly warned before taking the drug that these side effects can occur.
Xarelto is drug used to prevent blood clots and lowers the risk of stroke in those who have an abnormal heartbeat condition called atrial fibrillation. However, serious side effects have been associated with the drug. Side effects that have been reported include:
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Cerebral hemorrhage
- Stroke
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Internal bleeding
- Death
It was discovered after reports of hemorrhaging started coming in that the drug does not have reversal agent which will stop the bleeding. Since the bleeding cannot be controlled, this has led to several deaths.
