According to the National Highway of Traffic Safety Administration, 41 percent of motor vehicle fatalities were a result of drunk driving on Super Bowl Sunday in 2010. In the past 10 years, there has been 15 deaths as a result of drunk driving on New Jersey roadways on Super Bowl, which three times the average number over other days of the year.
We all love to celebrate the big game, no matter what teams are playing. But before taking a drink during a Super Bowl party this weekend, keep these facts in mind:
- In New Jersey, operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 percent or higher constitutes a DUI. To calculate how many drinks it would take to reach the limit, click here.
- The New Jersey State Police will be increasing their patrols for drunken drivers on Sunday.
- A first time DUI offense in New Jersey will cost you thousands of dollars in fines, a suspended driver’s license, jail time, and a possible ignition interlock device installed on your car.
- Drivers with a BAC of 0.08 percent or higher involved in fatal crashes were seven times more likely to have a prior conviction for DWI than were drivers with no alcohol in their system.
