Can you guess the leading cause of head wounds?  Although head wounds can occur as a result of a variety of accidents, a great number are related to car crashes.  Unfortunately, sports related injuries also claim responsibility for many head wounds.  Pedestrian accidents.  Slip and falls.  Work-related accidents.  Unfortunately, all of these contribute to accidental head injuries.

We have intentionally generalized this discussion to head wounds.  There are many types of head injuries.  These can include concussions, skull fractures and lacerations.  Of course, the most severe is traumatic brain injury.

As attorneys experienced in personal injury claims, we see a number of clients who experience head wounds.  Some problems surface immediately.  Other issues are not initially apparent.

Different Types of Head Wounds

• Head Wounds that Need Stitches: You may have noticed that your head seems to bleed the most profusely.  The amount of blood may appear alarming.  The reason you see so much blood may be because there are so many blood vessels near the surface of the head and face.  Obviously, a medical expert needs to assess whether you need stitches to fix any laceration.
• Concussion: Concussions are considered mild traumatic brain injuries and are graded by severity. Concussions occur as a result of blows to the head. Many athletes suffer from this type of injury.  Although the long lasting effects of concussions are sometimes disputed, they are of grave concern.
• Skull Fracture: Any break to the cranial bone is considered a skull fracture.  They generally occur when something hard hits the head.  Fortunately, not all skull fractures involve brain injuries.  Unfortunately, skull fractures can go undetected.
• Hematoma or Hemorrhage: We’ve talked about head injuries bleeding on the outside.  However, some accidents can cause blood clots or internal uncontrolled brain bleeds.  Both are serious conditions.
• Traumatic Brain Injuries: Dealing with a traumatic brain injury  can be quite difficult.  There are different degrees of brain injuries.  All require expert intervention.  Most will require lifetime assistance.
