An early projection of traffic accident data for 2012 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 34,080 people died in motor vehicle accidents  in 2012, an increase of more than 5 percent over 2011 and the first single-year increase in fatalities in six years if the figures hold. The New Jersey region was one of only two zones out of 10 across the nation with a decrease in deaths.

According to the NHTSA, traffic accident fatalities steadily declined between 2005 and 2011. In 2005, 43,510 people were killed in motor vehicle accidents; that figure dropped to 32,367 in 2011.

The New Jersey region (which also includes New York and Pennsylvania) actually saw a slight drop in traffic accident fatalities, according to the NHTSA projections. Deaths related to car accidents, truck accidents and motorcycle accidents in this zone decreased about 1 percent in 2012, according to the report.
