Heroin Abuse is on the Rise in Jersey City

According to a recent report released by NJ.com, Jersey City was named as the second town in New Jersey to have the highest number of reported cases of heroin and opiate abuse. In 2012, 1,127 incidents were reported and 2013, police had arrested a 15-year-old boy and seized 59 bags of suspected heroin. Please be aware that in New Jersey, you can expect prison time and a hefty fine if you are arrested for possession of heroin, no matter how much you are carrying. Here is the penalties you can expect if you are arrested for possessing, using, or being under the influence of heroin:

  • If you are found with less than half an ounce, it is considered a third degree crime, no matter how much you have in your possession. The penalties for this type of crime is up to five years in prison, $35,000 in fines, and a mandatory six-month loss of your driver’s license.
  • If you are arrested with less than five ounces of heroin, you will be charged with a second-degree crime and receive five to 10 years in jail.
  • If you are arrested for with more than five ounces of heroin, then you can expect to be a charged with a first-degree crime and penalties are more severe – 10 to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $500,000.
