Chlorine exposure can happen to us all

We know, it’s winter. But looking out the window as the snow falls, we dream of the summer that will be upon us sooner than we think. The hot sun, the cool nights, and let’s not forget those lazy days beside the pool. But did you know that while at the pool you should be worrying about chlorine exposure?
Although typically thought of with cleaning a pool, chlorine can actually be found in many cleaning products on the market today. According to the CDC, the chemical is one of the most commonly manufactured chemicals in the US today and is used in both pools and drinking water to kill bacteria. It can also be produced as a poisonous gas and can spread rapidly once it is released into the air.
Your risk of exposure depends on how close you are when the chemical is released. Once the gas is airborne, you are exposed through skin or eye contact. You can also be exposed by breathing it in. When the chemical comes into contact with tissue such as your eyes or lungs, it produces an acid that can seriously damage the tissue.
Some of the symptoms of exposure include:
- Blurred vision
- Blisters and burn if your skin was exposed
- A burning sensation in your nose, throat, and eyes
- Nausea
- Chest tightness
- Difficulty breathing
