Do Arrest Rates Actually Soar on Holiday Weekends?

Today starts the weekend that we honor our fallen war heroes. However, there’s something that might or might not surprise you about holiday weekends. For whatever reason, arrest rates actually soar throughout different parts of the state.
Locally, you stand the chance of getting pulled over for drunken driving. According to news reports. Jersey City plans to set up field sobriety checkpoints. Since they haven’t disclosed the locations, you won’t know where to avoid them. That said, the easiest way to avoid a DWI arrest is to resist the temptation to get behind the wheel if you feel the least bit tipsy. Wise words, but not always a reality.
With weather forecasts calling for temperatures in the 80s, more and more people are outside. Some will head to barbeques, while others visit local events throughout Hudson County.
- Unfortunately, tempers become equally hot when the sun is out. As a result, arrests for assault charges accelerate during the warmer weather. This includes both bar fights and, of course, altercations in private homes.
The three-day weekend puts the family together more than usual. Reportedly, the police respond to more domestic violence complaints that result in arrests. When this happens, the parties ultimately need to consult with an attorney experienced in both family law and criminal defense.
Arrest Rates Increase All Over the State
In the meantime, it comes as no surprise that arrest rates increase all over the state during holiday weekends. For many, problems surfaced at the Jersey shore. In many cases, the arrests are alcohol-fueled. Police in towns far south respond to many complaints of rowdiness. These often result in arrests related to disorderly person offense.
- Juvenile arrests increase at the shore towns as well. A couple of years ago, Wildwood Police arrested 33 minors during Memorial Day Weekend.
Meanwhile, you may recall the Philadelphia woman arrested on Wildwood beach last year. The video of her arrest went viral when she refused to give police officers her identification. According to news reports, the young mother ultimately pled guilty to disorderly conduct.
- Some theorize that the rate of burglary arrests increases during holiday weekends. Police speculate that thieves take advantage of residents leaving their homes for a small vacation.
- The bottom line is that people arrested at any time of year need legal advice. Ultimately, the consequences of a criminal conviction can last for a very long time.
