It’s summer and a great number of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and dirt bikes are out. ATV operators and dirt bike riders should be aware. There are certain laws that apply to these types of vehicles. There are also some safety rules you should follow to avoid accidental injury.
Unfortunately, injuries associated with ATVs or dirt bikes can be monumental. A recent new article regarding medevac services referenced an ATV accident just last month. A boy was thrown from an ATV in a wooded area of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. His injuries were presumably severe as they required medevac services.
It is important to know the law regarding ATVs and dirt bikes. In addition, it is crucial that riders follow safety instructions so ATV accidents don’t occur.
The Law Regarding ATVs and Dirt Bikes
If you own or plan to operate an all-terrain vehicle or dirt bike, there are certain legal requirements. Here’s what you need to know:
- Vehicle must be registered at a State Motor Vehicle agency
- ATVs and dirt bikes must be insured
- Operators must be at least 14 years old
- ATVs and dirt bikes may only be used off road
- Vehicle operators under 18 are required to complete safety courses
- There are engine capacity size restrictions for 16 year olds operating ATV or dirt bikes
- It is illegal to sell an ATV or Dirt Bike to someone under 16 if the engine capacity is greater than 90 cubic centimeters.
The ATV Safety Institute has some important safety rules regarding the operation of all-terrain vehicles. Operators should be sure to wear a helmet and googles. They should also dress in long pants and long sleeve shirts. Over the ankle boots are suggested as footwear.
A person who operates an ATV or dirt bike should avoid using drugs or alcohol. If the equipment is designed for one person, they should not allow a passenger to ride with them.
Care should be taken concerning the terrain where these types of vehicles are used. There are specific trails where ATVs and dirt bikes are permitted. They should also be driven within a speed appropriate for the surface.
