When we think of slip and fall injuries, we generally think of icy and snowy weather. And it’s true, the majority of these accidents do happen in the wintertime. But just because the weather has become nicer doesn’t mean that slip and fall accidents stop happening. Anything can cause the accident, whether it’s slippery stairs after a summer storm or a crack in the sidewalk the owner has failed to fix.
According to the National Safety Council, falls accounted for about 8.9 million visits to the ER annually. In fact, more than 25,000 fatalities in 2009 occurred because of a slip and fall accident. Although many can be blamed on our own carelessness, sometimes the fault is due to negligence of the property owner. So let’s say you are visiting a neighbor. While going down the stairs, a loose step causes you to lose your balance and fall. What happens next is essential to proving fault later on.
Here are the following steps you should take after a fall:
- Seek immediate medical attention, even if all you receive is a bruise. You never know how much damage has happened until later.
- Make sure you examine the area where you tripped and fell. Was the loose step the cause of the accident? Could it have been prevented? Were you warned of the step and did your neighbor know about it before the accident?
- If you can, takes photos of the accident scene. This can be essential to your case later on.
- Remember not to assign fault. Let the insurance company decide who was at fault.
