Domestic violence is never just a sudden incident where someone is having a bad day and decides to take it out on his/her partner. It’s actually a pattern of violence that happens on a regular basis. Not all relationships follow this cycle — sometimes, the relationship is just flat-out war with no winners. But usually, the cycle of abuse comes in three stages:
- Tensions begin to mount between you and your abuser. He/she will begin calling you names. Acts of bullying may occur. During this time, the victim will try to appease the abuser but to no avail.
- Physical violence begins. This can usually be triggered by some event, no matter how insignificant such as the victim forgot to wash the dishes before leaving the house. According to Domestic Violence Roundtable, some experts believe the victim may do this act intentionally just to relieve the tension.
- Next is the honeymoon stage. The abuser apologizes and feels guilty for his/her actions. There will be promises of change and possible gifts. But this stage doesn’t last and it tensions begin to rise once more.
As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Law Offices of Anthony Carbone is addressing the issue of domestic violence in New Jersey and offer tips on how to protect you and your family. It can be hard to break a cycle of abuse, especially if you love your abuser. But it can be done, with the proper help and guidance. The best way to end the violence is to speak up. Tell a friend or family member what is happening. Contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Or just leave once and for all.
