What Happens If My Child Slips and Falls on School Property?

Your child is your single, most beloved possession. When you send him or her to school every morning, you should be able to entrust the school with their health and safety. Schools have a duty and responsibility to provide a reasonably safe environment and provide requisite supervision at all times. Unfortunately, accidents do occur when only a few adults are in charge of hundreds of children.
One of the most common incidents to occur in school buildings are slip and fall accidents. In most cases, these types of accidents cause minor bumps and bruises for children. They aren’t much of a worry. However, there are incidents that are more severe and the injuries are substantially more serious.
These include brain injuries from hitting their head, broken bones, spinal injuries from landing on their neck, and other severe bodily injuries. In most cases, these injuries will send your child to the emergency room or even worse. If the slip and fall accident occurred because of negligence on behalf of school personnel, you deserve to recover medical bills and other damages as a result of the injury(ies).
Causes of School Slip and Fall Injuries
Slip and fall accidents can happen for a variety of reasons. With too many children to count running through the hallways or gallivanting around at recess, it is no wonder that these incidents happen on an often-occurring basis. When minor incidents occur, clumsiness or lack of balance are usually to blame. When more serious injuries occur, these factors are usually associated with them:
- Uneven or cracked pavement
- Worn carpet, tiles, and flooring
- Objects or debris left in a pathway
- Slippery floors
- Dangerous stairs (without proper railing)
- Not-properly secured wires
The National Safety Council offers tips intended to prevent slip, trip, and fall down accidents no matter the place. Although many schools and most employers focus on a safe environment, the fact is that accidents do happen. Unfortunately, your child could easily become a victim.
