chlorine-exposure-swimming-pools-attorneySummer wouldn’t be summer without swimming pools! Who doesn’t enjoy taking a dip in a cool pool on a hot day? But watch out for the chlorine. It can be dangerous.

Recently in Maryland, 35 people, including 31 children attending day camp, were taking to the hospital after being exposed to chemical fumes at a YMCA camp pool.  According to reports, there was a mechanical malfunction which caused an excessive amount into the pool. Many of the children experienced exposure symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. If the owners of the camp hadn’t acted quickly enough, there would have been more fatalities.

As shown above, even when chlorine is diluted in water, there are health risks involved in swimming in a pool. Even in small amounts, chlorine exposure can cause serious complications to your health, such as:

  • Nausea and vomiting, if you ingested the water
  •  A burning sensation in the throat
  •  Bloody nose
  • Eye irritation, such as a burning sensation
  • Chest pain
  •  Coughing and shortness of breath
  •  A burning feeling on your skin
  •   Fluid in your lungs

If you spend little time in a pool, the effects are just temporary. But if you’re swimmer who spends a lot of time in the pool, there can be many long-term serious health risks involved. You can experience lung problems, tooth corrosion, and even cancer. In fact, a health expert recently said that chlorine exposure is giving children asthma.
