What Should I Do After a Truck Accident?

Car accidents in general are a stressful and scary experience. But can you imagine getting into an accident with a truck, such as a tractor-trailer? Not only could you be seriously injured but you may find a roadblock in getting compensation that you wouldn’t have to worry about in a regular car accident. You’ll have to deal with not only with your insurance company, but you may have to deal with the truck driver’s company as well.
After getting into an accident with a commercial truck driver, remember to follow the same guidelines that happen after a car accident: Call emergency services, obtain contact information from everyone involved, get witness reports, and take photographs if you can. But what comes after can be stressful. You may be approached by the truck company, even before you pick a lawyer. The company may want you to record a statement or sign a form for its insurance carrier. The company may demand or even threaten a lawsuit against you. But keep this in mind:
- Whatever you do, don’t sign or record anything without a personal injury lawyer present.
- Remember, don’t make a statement about the accident to anyone other than the police, your lawyer, and your own insurance company. It may come back to haunt you if you do.
- Also make sure you get all the evidence you can at the scene of the accident. You may be surprised how quickly the evidence disappears otherwise.
- And of course, never admit fault.
