Sad news. Many of us remember the movie “A Beautiful Mind”, based on the life of John Nash, a New Jersey mathematician and Nobel prize winner. Unfortunately, the weekend’s news reported that Nash’s life was lost in a taxi accident. His wife also died in the same accident.
Nash was a well-respected mathematician who received a great deal of attention as a result of “A Beautiful Mind”. The film focused on the challenges Nash encountered in dealing with paranoid schizophrenia. It brought to the forefront the impact mental illness can have on daily living.
According to news reports, the taxi accident occurred when the cab driver attempted to pass a vehicle on the New Jersey Turnpike. Unfortunately, the cabbie lost control of his vehicle and struck a guardrail. Mr. and Mrs. Nash were seated in the rear of the taxi, and were not wearing seat belts. They were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
It is undisputed that seat belts save lives. Statistically, during a recent five-year span, seatbelts were estimated to have saved at least 63,000 lives. New Jersey legislators are committed to seat belt use and instituted a law requiring all passenger vehicle occupants to wear seat belts.
The Nash couple was returning home from New York City at the time of the accident. New York does not require seat belt usage for those who are passengers in the backseat of a taxi.
Any motor vehicle accident can cause significant personal injuries. Obviously, we advise all of our clients to immediately seek medical assistance. However, it is also important to secure a police report and document the accident. It is also crucial to take down the license plate number, the operator’s name. We suggest that clients use their smartphone to take pertinent photographs.
Medical bill payment for injuries involved in a taxi accident can also represent frustration. Many cab companies do not maintain adequate personal injury protection. It is therefore important to secure legal representation to assist you. Otherwise, you could be responsible for your bills.
