A recent murder in Salt Lake City is a reminder that domestic violence is something that could happen to anyone at anytime without any signs or red flags.
Mary Flynn Palley was a 73-year-old retired lawyer who helped domestic violence victims with their cases. According to family and friends, the couple was very loving and had a good relationship. According to police officials, however, Palley, who was suffering from Parkinson’s disease, was shot and killed by her husband before he turned the gun on himself.
Domestic violence is an epidemic that just won’t slow down. According to recent news reports, the crime occurs every 7 minutes and 5 seconds in the state of New Jersey. Fatal domestic violence incidents had increased in New Jersey by five percent from 2010 to 2011. And what’s even more shocking is nearly three out of four Americans personally know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence.
But unfortunately, domestic abuse is not easily as recognizable as you would think. Sure if your friend is sporting unexplained bruising after seeing her boyfriend, this may be a case of violence. But not all domestic abuse cases are the same – one couple may use their fists while another couple uses their words. We just don’t know what happens behind closed doors.
