Summer is almost here. Finally! As people begin to enjoy the weather, it’s important to keep safety in mind. Many people tend to discount slip and fall accidents during the summer and chalk it up to a mostly winter weather occurrence. But there are many summer conditions that can put people at risk. Slip and fall accident injuries can have lasting effects well beyond summer months. The Law Offices of Anthony Carbone wants everyone to be aware of the potential hazards and enjoy a safe summer.
Outdoors is the place to be when summer rolls around. Barbeques, bonfires, camping trips, picnics, vacations, and much more are something we all look forward too. Unlike the comforts of your living room, these activities present more hazards to the outside terrain. Anything is possible, so it’s important to know where you’re going at all times to ensure you or a loved one does not slip and fall.
Watch Out for Water
Water and slippery surfaces are one of the main causes of slip and fall injuries during the summer. The surface around a pool can be very slippery, however, those enjoying the pool should be cautious in order to reduce the risk of potential injury. A simple fall can lead to someone hitting their head and falling into the water unconscious, possibly drowning.
That’s not one of the only causes of slippery conditions. Rain showers and thunderstorms can cause surfaces to get slippery really quickly. Sidewalks can become sliding boards and grassy hills can become mudslides. Hail can also make surfaces become slick too.
Don’t Slip on Your Shoes!
Summer weather means flip flops and sandal season. These types of shoes are less secure than other types of footwear worn around the year and often have less grip. Because of this, more slip and fall accidents can occur. They also provide less protection for your feet in case of an accident. You should always bring the proper footwear to the environment you plan on being in. It can help save you from potential injury.
Other Causes
Aside from slippery surfaces and improper footwear causing slip and fall accidents, there are plenty of other factors to consider. Property owners should take the necessary steps to make their premises safe and secure to visitors. This can include sidewalk repair, removing debris from walking paths, and providing the proper warning for hazardous areas.
Failure to protect people from hazards, or any cause of slip and fall accidents, can result in the following injuries:
- Soft tissue injuries
- Abrasions/cuts
- Head injuries/concussions
- Broken bones
- Spinal cord injuries
