NJ Insurance Fraud Defense Attorney Anthony CarboneIf you’ve been accused of insurance fraud, it’s a pretty serious crime you are dealing with. Not only can you expect to face several years in prison but be saddled with some pretty hefty fines. But what exactly is insurance fraud and why is it such a serious crime in New Jersey?

Insurance fraud is when you provide false information to an insurance company in order to gain something, such as creating an injury claim when you haven’t been injured. The reason why it’s such as serious crime is that everyone is affected by fraud, not only the insurance company. Even consumers can be affected because defrauding the insurance companies will cause rates to go up.

There are different types of insurance fraud. Here are a few that are the most common:

  • Auto accident claims. Say you’ve been in an auto accident but wasn’t injured. When filling out the claim to the insurance company, you say that you have medical bills. This is a form of insurance fraud.
  • Health care/Medicaid – If your doctor over bills the insurance company in order to pay for treatment that didn’t cost that much, this is insurance fraud.
  • Workers’ compensation. If your employer has failed to purchase workers’ compensation insurance for his/her employees, this is a form of insurance fraud.

If you are accused of insurance fraud, you’re going to need an experienced criminal defense attorney to help you with the charge. Contact the Law Offices of Anthony Carbone today for a free consultation.
