With only a week until Christmas Eve, the holiday season is in full swing in New Jersey. That means spending time with family and friends, along with some well-deserved time off from work. However, you may not be able to enjoy those things if an unsuspected injury occurs.
The holiday season, while known as one of the most joyous times of the year, is notorious for injuries. In fact, more people suffer from injuries during the holidays than at any other time of the year. The injuries that occur range from house fires (which we talked about in a recent blog), slip and fall injuries, auto accidents, and a variety of other personal injuries.
For many, the holidays are filled with stress and can be quite overwhelming. It’s estimated that 20,000 people are sent to emergency rooms in the U.S. each holiday season. With that in mind, it’s important to keep you and your loved ones safe during one of the most hectic times of the year.
Common Holiday-Related Injuries
- Fall-related Injuries: An injury caused by a fall is one of the most common types of injuries that occur during the holiday season. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 6,000 people visit the ER due to falls sustained while decorating their homes. To prevent this from happening, make sure your ladder or step stools are safe before you or a loved one uses them to decorate your home.
- Burn Injuries: Fires are another common source of injuries during this time of the year. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 30 percent of all house fires occur during the holidays. There are several factors that contribute to house fires, from issues with cooking equipment to bad wiring with your holiday lights.
- Drunk Driving Accidents: During the holiday season, we see a spike in the number of alcohol-related auto accidents. There are many different events to attend, from family outings to office parties, that can lead to an individual becoming impaired behind the wheel. If you are hosting a party during the holidays, make sure you do whatever possible to ensure your guests’ safety.
- Lacerations and Cuts: This may not seem like a major issue, but it can be. During the holidays, lacerations and cuts send numerous people to New Jersey emergency rooms. It is estimated that 6,000 people are treated nationally in the ER from cuts sustained from opening gifts. We’re serious. Be cautious when opening your gifts this year.
