Previously, the community had been called the “English Neighborhood,” and as was known as the first primarily English-speaking settlement on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River. Englewood was the site of author Upton Sinclair’s 1906 socialist community known as the Helilcon Home Colony. The colony burned down a year later.
