The borough of Haledon, New Jersey, started out as a streetcar suburb of Paterson during the Civil War. Many of Paterson’s silk workers lived in the borough and even elected a socialist mayor in 1912. In fact, during the 1913 Paterson silk strike, Haledon was used as a place to hold meetings for the striking workers at the Pietro and Maria Botto House. The house has now become a National Historic Landmark and is home to the American Labor Museum. Haledon is the hometown of the members of the rock band The Feelies, former NFL linebacker Bruce Huther, and Olympian Bruce Baumgartner.
