The Borough of Oakland, New Jersey, was incorporated in 1902 from portions of Franklin Township, now known as Wyckoff. The name comes from the white oak trees that are found in the area. It’s known for the Van Allen House, which was a stop for General George Washington and his troops in 1777. In 1985, a shootout between two rival gangs occurred at the FRG Sports Complex. It resulted in two deaths and a number of injuries. Oakland was once ranked number 43 on Business Week’s “Great Places to Raise Kids — for Less.” It was also ranked #1 for Young Families in 2013 by New Jersey Monthly.
